WinCorporate Social Responsibility and the World's Poor

The Big Win Win

80% of the world’s population lives below the poverty line and almost half the world – over 3 billion people – live on less than $2.50 a day.

9 million children under 5 die each year from poverty-related causes (24,000 every day).

Nearly a billion people entered the 21st century unable to read a book or sign their names.

One billion people in the world today live in extreme poverty – i.e. less than $1 a day. It’s often called "below subsistence" where people are unable to meet their basic needs. Another 2 billion live on $2 a day. Called "medium poverty" or "subsistence", households barely meet their basic needs – they have to forego many of the things we take for granted such as education and healthcare, and one small misfortune can plummet them back into extreme poverty.

Self sufficiency is regarded as >$3 a day, and whereas governments and NGOs can help move people from $1 to $2, they are unable to take that extra step without the involvement of business.

Currently, about 3.7 billion or 60% of the world’s population is too poor to participate in the market economy. Yet if they were, imagine the massive leap forward for both humanity and the global economy.

What are the economic ramifications poverty? How does the corporate sector see the problem? Is it just about raising income, or does alleviating poverty involve developing social cohesion as well? Does the corporate sector have a responsibility to the global poor? What does it do now to help alleviate poverty? What should it do in the future? How?

Join us to find out how we can make the big win-win happen.
