Karen B. Allen is Deputy Representative at UNICEF in Pakistan. In this job, she coordinates emergency, recovery and development programmes for children in the areas of health, nutrition, water, sanitation and hygiene, education and protection. These programmes target the poorest children and families, with special emphasis on ending gender based discrimination against girls. Prior to coming to Pakistan in June 2008, Karen was UNICEF’s Deputy Representative in Uganda, and Regional Programme Planning Chief for eastern and southern Africa.
She earned a PhD in Demography, and for many years combined research, evaluation and training with raising children and doing volunteer work, before returning to full time work. She is married with two adult children. Karen is an American who has spent much of her life in developing countries, fulfilling her passion and commitment to bring hope and help to children and women of those countries.
